The Legendary Love Story of Hou Yi and Chang'e

In ancient Chinese mythology, there is a story about the love between Hou Yi, the great archer, and Chang'e, the goddess of the moon. It's an epic tale that has been passed down through generations and still remains one of the most cherished love stories of all time.

The Beginning of the Story

The story of Hou Yi and Chang'e begins a long time ago in ancient China. According to the legend, there were originally 10 suns in the sky, which caused a lot of trouble for the people on earth. The crops were burned, and the people were suffering from the heat. That's when Hou Yi, a skilled archer, decided to do something about it. He climbed to the top of a mountain and shot down nine of the suns with his bow and arrows, leaving only one to give light and warmth to the earth.

Hou Yi became a hero and was greatly respected by the people. As a reward for his bravery, the immortal Queen Mother of the West gave him a elixir of immortality. She told him that if he drank it, he would become a god, and he would be able to live forever. Hou Yi, however, did not want to become a god. He wanted to stay on earth and be with his beloved wife, Chang'e.

The Separation of the Lovers

Chang'e was a beautiful woman with a kind and gentle heart. She loved Hou Yi deeply and was always by his side. But one day, while Hou Yi was out hunting, a wicked man came to their home and tried to steal the elixir of immortality. To prevent him from getting it, Chang'e drank the entire potion herself and flew up to the moon. She became the goddess of the moon and has lived there ever since.

Hou Yi was heartbroken. He missed Chang'e terribly and would look up at the moon every night, hoping to catch a glimpse of his beloved wife. He even made offerings to her, hoping that she would hear his prayers and come back to him.

The Reunion of the Lovers

Legend has it that on the 15th day of the eighth lunar month, the moon is at its brightest and most beautiful. It's the night of the Mid-Autumn Festival, and all across China, people gather to celebrate the moon and eat mooncakes. It's also said that on this night, Chang'e comes down from the moon and reunites with Hou Yi for a brief moment.

It's a bittersweet reunion, as Hou Yi knows that he cannot stay with Chang'e forever. But he cherishes the moment they have together and hopes that one day they will be reunited for good.

And so, the legend of Hou Yi and Chang'e lives on, inspiring love and devotion in people all over the world.
